The first property admittance in Birmingham was developed on January 28, 1819, by Colonel Benjamin K. Pierce, brother of future U.S. President Franklin Pierce with the north west 1/4 of area 36. Colonel Pierce frequented his property many times, but in no way settled on it. In March 1818, John W. Hunter and his sibling Daniel left Auburn, NY, by sleigh and journeyed to The state of Michigan by means of Upper Canada. They anxiously waited in Detroit for their Dad and members of the family who showed up by schooner over Lake Erie in July. Family members stayed in Detroit until early spring 1819 when John W. made an admittance for Homes For Sale In Birmingham MI in the northeast quarter of segment 36, now within the south east portion of current day Birmingham.
